About this practice

Compare two 3D shapes to decide whether they match after rotation or are mirror images. In Same or mirror, each round has 6 to 10 questions by level, scored by correct answers with no time limit.

Same or mirror shows two block figures. Decide whether the right one is the same shape turned, or its mirror image turned. Half the questions are mirror images, so always choosing one answer scores half.

In Turn to match, turn the right shape a quarter turn at a time until it matches. If no turn works, press Mirror.

In Pick the match, choose the matching figure from 5 options. Compare arm connections: all options have the same number of cubes.

What it measures, and what it does not

This practices holding a solid in mind, turning it, and comparing it with another. Folding and cutting are separate tasks. Six to ten questions give a short snapshot, so scores vary.

What each level changes

In Same or mirror, the levels change the figure size, turn angles and round length:

  • Levels 1 and 2: 6 cubes, turns of 90 or 180 degrees. 6 questions.
  • Levels 3 and 4: 7 cubes, turns of 60, 90, 120 or 180 degrees. 6 or 8 questions.
  • Levels 5 and 6: 8 cubes, turns of 45, 60, 90, 120, 135 or 180 degrees. 8 questions.
  • Levels 7 and 8: 9 cubes, turns in 15 degree steps from 30 to 180 degrees, around diagonal axes as well. 8 or 10 questions.

Up to level 6, every turn is around an axis that runs along the edges of the blocks.

Two worked examples

Example 1, level 2: both figures have 6 cubes. Follow the arms from corresponding ends. They come in the same order and bend the same way. The right figure is the left one turned 180 degrees, without reflection. Answer: Same, rotated.

Example 2, level 2: the right figure is the left one’s mirror image, turned 180 degrees. Line up two arms and the third points the other way. No turn fixes that. Answer: Mirror image.

What your result means

Results count correct answers and show median answer time when available. Same or mirror separates turned and mirrored figures. For missed mirrors, follow a bent arm: reflection reverses its bend. With sharing enabled and enough saved rounds, this mode shows the share of rounds at that level that scored lower. Compare your results within the same mode and level.
