When my kettle stopped working, I assumed I would need a new one. Before buying it, I took the old kettle to a repair service. A technician found a loose electrical connection. After repairing it and checking that the kettle was safe to use, the technician returned it to me.
I had not known whether the fault could be fixed. Asking someone with the right skills gave me a choice. I did not need to open an electrical appliance myself to find out whether repair was possible.
Repair is easier when a product has replaceable parts and useful instructions. A sealed case that is difficult to open can make the work harder. Parts that cannot be obtained may make a repair too costly or impossible.
I now ask about repair before replacing things. Not every repair is safe or worth its cost, but checking can help me make a better decision. Keeping a useful object also avoids throwing it away simply because one part has failed.
