Printing did not begin with Johannes Gutenberg. In East Asia, people printed from carved woodblocks centuries before his lifetime. Movable type appeared in China, and Korean printers used movable metal type before Gutenberg worked in Europe.
Around the 1440s in Mainz, Gutenberg developed a successful European system that combined reusable metal letters, suitable ink, and a press. Workers could arrange the letters for a page, print many copies, and then use the letters again. His system fit alphabetic writing, which needs a relatively small set of characters.
Printing spread quickly across Europe. Printers produced books, pamphlets, and other texts in larger numbers than hand copying allowed. Prices generally fell, although books did not become cheap or available to everyone at once. Reading, publishing, religion, government, and scholarship changed over time as more copies circulated.
The fuller history has several centers of invention. East Asian printers developed woodblock and movable-type methods earlier. Gutenberg’s achievement was not creating all printing from nothing; it was building a durable system that transformed book production in Europe.
