Why We Sleep

Written by Studio AM.

Sleep supports the body and brain. While we rest, many processes continue that help us function during the day.

The body repairs tissues, and the brain remains active. Sleep can help strengthen some memories of things we have learned. Getting enough rest also supports attention, which helps us take in new information when awake. Learning involves both studying and rest; sleep does not select and save every useful fact for us.

Too little sleep can make concentration harder and reactions slower. We may also become short of temper. Even one poor night can affect safety if it leaves us too sleepy to drive or use machinery. Repeated sleep problems can affect health and deserve attention.

Making room for sleep is part of preparing for the next day, not simply time away from useful work.
