On Monday, an orange umbrella appeared in the lobby of Cedar House. Mina from apartment 6B took it upstairs, certain that it belonged to Mr. Cho, who always carried bright colors. He shook his head but accepted it, promising to ask around.
On Tuesday, Mr. Cho saw the cleaner, Paula, leaving in heavy rain without a coat. He lent her the umbrella. Paula returned it Wednesday morning to the mailroom, where a courier recognized a delivery label still tied beneath the strap. The label named apartment 2A.
Mina felt embarrassed. She had privately complained that 2A's new tenant kept leaving belongings in shared spaces. When she knocked, however, Samir from 2A explained that the umbrella had arrived with groceries he never ordered. He had placed it in the lobby so its owner might recognize it.
