Mina found a silver button beside the market gate. It matched the buttons on a traveler's fine coat. The traveler had already vanished into the crowd.
Mina could keep it. No one had seen her bend down. Instead, she drew a chalk arrow toward the lost-and-found stall and wrote its name beside the arrow. She placed the button there and returned to her fruit basket.
Rain erased the arrow before noon. Near closing time, the traveler found the stall anyway. Someone else had noticed Mina's fading mark and drawn another arrow. Mina never learned this. She only saw the empty tray where the button had rested. She had returned the button without a witness or a promise of thanks, and someone else had helped keep the directions clear.
