Every Thursday evening, shoes gathered outside Door Twelve. Some were polished, some muddy, and one pair was bright yellow. Mara lived across the hall. She heard many voices behind the door, rising and falling in a rhythm she could not understand.
She began imagining explanations. Perhaps the apartment held secret auctions. Perhaps the tenants repaired radios and tested them at once. When a cardboard sign appeared beside the shoes, Mara saw only unfamiliar writing and became more uneasy.
One rainy Thursday, the owner of the yellow shoes knocked on Mara’s door. He held a wet bag whose bottom had torn. Workbooks covered the floor. Each showed two greetings translated into several languages. “Could you help me gather these?” he asked. “Our free language class starts soon.”
Mara carried the books inside. The shoes belonged to nurses, cooks, grandparents, and two teenagers. They practiced greetings, taking turns so everyone could finish. The sign welcomed learners in six languages. Mara had mistaken a room designed to make strangers understandable for something mysterious. The next week, her shoes stood outside Door Twelve. She offered to help with conversation practice and began learning the yellow-shoed man’s first language too.
