Nico's new apartment faced a narrow street. Each afternoon, a bicycle bell rang twice below his window. By the time he looked, the rider had vanished.
On Friday, Nico waited beside the front gate. The bell sounded, and a girl coasted around the corner with a basket of bread. She stopped at three doors but skipped his building. “Why do you ring twice?” Nico asked.
“Once means I am here,” she said. “Twice means I have one loaf left.” Nico ran upstairs for coins. His grandfather shook his head. “We have bread, but Mrs. Chen in 4A cannot use the stairs today.”
Nico bought the last loaf and carried it to 4A. The next afternoon, he heard two bright rings again. This time he did not hurry for money. He opened the window and called which neighbor needed the final loaf. Soon the strange sound had become part of how he understood his new street.
