Mei folded a paper crane while riding to her first day at a new school. At her stop, she hurried away and left it on the seat. Mr. Alvarez found the crane. On one wing he wrote, “I hope today is gentle.” He passed it to a nurse boarding at the next stop. She added, “Drink some water.” A mechanic wrote, “Ask for help before the bolt breaks.”
The driver placed the crane near the fare box. All day, riders added tiny messages. Some were serious; one simply said, “The moon looked enormous last night.”
After school, Mei boarded the same bus. She recognized the fold and reached for it. The driver asked her to read the wings before taking it home.
Mei had lost a blank crane and found a crowded one. The first day at school had been difficult, but the messages made the city feel less empty. She added, “I sat with someone at lunch,” and left the crane for one more trip.
