Say the rule before the card
A banner above the card names the rule in force. It is color, shape or how many. Say it to yourself before the first card.
When the banner changes, say the new rule once before you answer. The card can change too. The banner tells you which property of the current card to report.
Changing rules can slow your responses. The fixed block shows your pace when the rule stays the same, so you can compare it with the switching block.
Three cards, two rules
The first card is three orange circles and the banner says color. The answer is Orange.
The second card is two blue triangles. The banner still says color, so the answer is Blue. Nothing has to change in your head.
On the third card the banner says shape. The card is one green square, so the answer is Square. Saying shape before you press can help you avoid answering Green by habit.
One card, one rule
The banner says sort by how many. The card is two blue triangles.
Answer what the rule asks about. Not the color, and not the shape.
