Isolate the changing condition
First identify the condition whose effect you want to compare. Choose two groups that differ in that condition while keeping the other listed condition the same. If both change, you cannot tell which change explains the difference in results.
Volunteers are assigned by chance. Both groups take the same test in the same study period. The other condition may also affect the score.
