Say how the first two words connect
A verbal analogy gives one complete word pair and the start of another. Your answer completes the second pair using the same relationship. Read each pair from left to right.
A button is part of a shirt. A window is part of a house. The sentence “the first thing is part of the second” fits both pairs in the same order.
Other questions use cause and effect, examples and categories, degrees of intensity, functions, or opposites. Name the specific connection before looking for a word that fits it.
Keep the direction of the relationship
An oak is a kind of tree. To complete robin to something, use the same sentence: a robin is a kind of bird. Bird completes the category relationship.
A nest is connected with a robin, but a robin is not a kind of nest. Being associated with the word is not enough to match this particular relationship.
The order matters: oak is the example and tree is its category. Keep example to category in the new pair. Check your sentence against both pairs before choosing.
Complete a measuring relationship
A thermometer measures temperature. A weighing scale measures something else. Which word completes the second pair using that same function?
Use one sentence for both pairs: the first object measures the second thing. The word scale here means the device used for weighing.
This checkpoint has two choices. Practice rounds have six questions with five choices each, across eight levels of vocabulary and relationships. Familiarity with the English words affects how difficult a question feels.
Try it
Thermometer is to temperature as weighing scale is to which word?
- Height
- Weight
Show the answer
Weight
Correct. A thermometer measures temperature and a weighing scale measures weight. The same function connects both pairs in the same direction.
