Anchor the Go stones

Use a center or edge as an anchor, then remember each nearby stone and its color.

Stones sit on the crossings

B means black. W means white. Start at the center, then look beside it.

A stone belongs on an intersection where two lines cross, not inside a square. On this 5 × 5 board, the center is row 3, column 3. Rows run from top to bottom; columns run from left to right.

More

Choose a clear anchor, such as the center or an edge. Describe the other stones relative to it, keeping their colors: “black in the center, black one place left, white one place above”. No Go rules are needed for this memory task.

Rebuild the same small shape

Place black in the center and on the crossing immediately left of it. Then place white immediately above the center. These three stones form the same pattern, whichever one you place first.

In the practice, study as long as you need and select Hide stones. Choose Black or White, then tap an intersection. To correct a stone, choose the other color or use Erase. Undo restores the last edit.

Place as many stones as you studied before checking. Each stone needs both the correct intersection and the correct color. The practice asks for a remembered pattern, not the next move in a Go game.

The anchor is at row 3, column 3. Position and color both matter.

Read a different arrangement

This time, look below the center. Which color belongs on that crossing?

1122334455BBW
Use the central crossing as your anchor. B = black; W = white.

Try it

Which stone belongs immediately below the center?

  1. Black
  2. White
Show the answer
