Check one thing at a time
Each panel is built from five things: how many triangles there are, how big they are, whether they are filled, which way they point, and where the dot sits.
Read the four panels once for each of the five. Most of them will not move. The one that does is the rule.
In this series the dot moves one place clockwise: the top, the top right, the right, the bottom right. Count, size, fill and direction hold still. So the fifth panel has the dot at the bottom, and everything else stays as it is.
The dot does not always move one place. Work out the step from the panels each time.
1Count the triangles across the four panels.
2Do the same for size, fill, direction and the dot.
3Take the option that carries the rule one step further.
A series that turns
These four panels each hold one triangle. The count holds still at one. The size holds still. The fill holds still. The dot holds still at the left.
The triangle turns. Panel 1 points up. Panel 2 points up and right. Panel 3 points right. Panel 4 points down and right. That is 45 degrees clockwise each time.
Another 45 degrees clockwise from down and right points down, so panel 5 holds one filled triangle pointing down, with the dot still at the left.
With quarter turns, panel 5 would look exactly like panel 1, so the practice adds a second change to keep the rule clear.
Two things at once
On some boards two of the five move together and the other three hold still. This board is one of those.
The dot moves one place clockwise. Now read the fill across the four panels, and work out what the fifth panel does.
Try it
Is the fifth panel filled or outlined?
- Filled
- Outlined
Show the answer
Filled
The fill changes every panel: filled, outlined, filled, outlined. One more change makes the fifth panel filled.
