Scale length, area and volume

Predict how a solid changes when every length is multiplied by the same factor.

Count the length factors

A cube with edge s has surface area 6s² and volume s³. Surface area measures its six faces in square units. Volume measures the space inside in cubic units.

Double the edge from 1 to 2. Surface area changes from 6 to 24, a factor of 4. Volume changes from 1 to 8, a factor of 8.

12
Doubling every edge quadruples surface area and multiplies volume by eight.
