Read rise over run

Find a line’s slope from coordinate differences and keep the sign.

Compare two changes

Slope is the change in vertical coordinate divided by the change in horizontal coordinate: (y₂ − y₁)/(x₂ − x₁). It describes how much y changes for each unit of x.

From (1, 1) to (4, 3), the rise is 2 and the run is 3. The slope is 2/3. Use coordinate values rather than the apparent tilt of a drawing with unknown axis scales.

32(1, 1)(4, 3)
A rise of 2 over a run of 3 gives slope 2/3.
