Use coordinate differences

Separate distance from midpoint by using differences for length and averages for location.

Build a right triangle

Between A(1, 1) and B(5, 4), the horizontal change is 5 − 1 = 4 and the vertical change is 4 − 1 = 3. These are perpendicular legs of a right triangle.

The straight distance is √(4² + 3²) = 5. The midpoint uses averages instead: M = ((1 + 5)/2, (1 + 4)/2) = (3, 2.5). Differences measure change; averages locate the halfway point.

A(1, 1)B(5, 4)M(3, 2.5)43
The segment is the hypotenuse; M is halfway along it.
